About Us

History

The French presence in Ontario, dating back several hundred years, has played an integral role in Ontario’s history. Subsequent to the unyielding efforts of Federal and Provincial leaders who were committed to establishing equality of rights in French language services, they eventually succeeded with the passage of the French Language Services Act (1986).

This passage became a significant marker for francophone communities which eventually afforded them growth in opportunities and in government resources. It was then that local leaders were successful in spearheading the vision of a new bilingual clinic. This project included coordinated efforts by community members, and in 1987, they introduced the first Bilingual Legal Clinic to the Windsor and Essex County region; which veritably has its own rich history of francophone presence. This endeavor is also supported by the ongoing commitment of community members and professionals who act as board members to ensure its preservation.

The Clinic’s Letters Patent were granted on February 22, 1988 and initiated by the following co-founders: William Joseph St. Pierre, Robert Beaudoin, Marcel Alphonse Bergeron, Brian Charles Ducharme, Aline Marie Gisele Harrison, Cecile Marie Sylvestre, Rose Lynn Voyvodic, Dave Cassivi, Pamela Pons-Lauzon, Donald Eugene Lassaline, Prof. Neil Gold, Natale Maria Vella, Jacques Joseph Kenny and Bernadette Grenier.

Its first Executive Director/lawyer, Jacques Chartrand, was hired to oversee the clinic’s administration and law practices. Furthermore, Marie Laforge was hired as the first secretary to manage the day to day operations of the office. She maintains a significant role in its functioning to this day, as Office Manager.

A list of the current personnel and Board Members may be found in the "About Us” section of this site. For information on becoming a Board Member, please click on the tab on the Contact Us tab.

The Legal Clinic wishes to acknowledge the following former personnel and former Board Members in appreciation for their years of dedication and for providing quality service to its community.
